Significance of the Design:

  • This ring features a simple, incised cruciform motif, marking it as an early piece of Christian-inspired jewellery in Britain. Following the Edict of Milan in 313 AD, Christianity began to spread through the Roman administrative and military classes. Unlike the elaborate Byzantine crosses of later centuries, this Late Roman design is characterized by its understated simplicity, often referred to as a “primary cross.”

The design served both as a personal statement of faith and a protective talisman. In the unstable years of the late 4th century, symbols of the new state religion were worn to invoke divine favour and provide comfort during a period of significant social transition. The pointed oval (mandorla-like) bezel is a classic late-Roman form, designed to sit low on the finger, reflecting a shift toward more practical, humble adornment compared to the ostentatious gold rings of the High Empire.

The Find:

Discovered by a metal detectorist in the historic landscape of Oxfordshire – an area rich in late-Roman villa sites and farmsteads – the original artifact remains in remarkable condition. It possesses a deep, stable “riverine” patina, suggesting it rested in damp, mineral-rich soil for nearly 1,600 years. The wear on the bezel indicates that the cross was a focal point for the owner, perhaps touched or rubbed as a tactile aid for private prayer.

The Casting: This is an exact 1:1 cast. We have meticulously preserved the hand-cut, slightly irregular lines of the cross to ensure the original maker’s intent is visible.

Material: Available in Solid Sterling Silver, 9ct Gold, or 18ct Gold.

Finish: Hand-burnished to highlight the recessed cross while maintaining the authentic, gently weathered silhouette of the original late-Roman band.
