The History of the Find:
Period: 14th–15th Century (Late Medieval)
Find Location: Norfolk, UK
Style: Circular petalled bezel with foliate shoulders
Significance of the Design:
This ring features a stylised six-petalled flower or rosette on its flat bezel. In medieval symbolism flowers were often associated with purity, new life and the Virgin Mary, and six-petalled forms have sometimes been interpreted as protective or devotional motifs. Whether this particular flower carried a precise religious meaning is unknown, but the symbolism would have been familiar within medieval visual culture.
The shoulders widen into leaf-like forms, creating a flowing transition from the stem-like hoop to the floral bezel. This organic treatment reflects the broader taste for foliage and natural forms seen throughout Gothic art. Rings with decorative bezels of this kind would have appealed to people who wanted jewellery that combined personal symbolism with visible refinement.
The Find:
Discovered by a metal detectorist in Norfolk, the original artefact survives in unusually good condition. The crisp flower and vein-like shoulder details suggest a carefully made piece, while Norfolk's wealth and dense medieval population provide a fitting background for jewellery of this quality.
