The History of the Find:

Period: Roman Britain

Find Location: Near Selby, North Yorkshire

Style: Flat oval bezel with punched ring-and-dot decoration

Significance of the Design:

The ring-and-dot motif, sometimes described as an eye or pellet-in-ring pattern, is one of the oldest geometric devices used in European decoration. In the Roman world eye-like and concentric motifs were often associated with protection, and designs of this kind are thought to have been worn in part to avert misfortune or the evil eye.

Beyond that protective interpretation, the flat bezel gives the ring the appearance of a small signet. While wealthier Romans often used engraved gemstones, simpler metal rings allowed a much wider section of society to wear a personal emblem in a similar form. This ring may therefore have combined fashion, identity and protective symbolism in a single everyday object.

The Find:

Discovered by a metal detectorist near Selby in North Yorkshire, the original artefact has survived with its distinctive patina and ring-and-dot detail intact. Wear across the bezel suggests that it was used and handled for a considerable period before it was eventually lost.

Weight by Metal (approximate, varies by ring size):

  • Solid Silver (925): 3.1g
  • 9ct Gold: 3.3g
  • 18ct Gold: 4.6g
  • Platinum: 6.2g
