Significance of the Design:

The penannular form is one of the most recognisable silhouettes associated with Celtic metalwork. Its open-ended construction made a substantial bangle or arm-ring practical to wear and allowed a degree of adjustment.

In North Wales, home to Celtic communities including the Ordovices, pieces of personal metalwork such as this are thought to have carried meanings beyond simple decoration. Bangles and arm-rings may have expressed identity, loyalty, status or important life stages, and some may have been exchanged as gifts. The plain rounded section gives this example a robust, everyday character suited to a piece intended to be worn rather than kept purely for display.

The Find:

Discovered by a metal detectorist in North Wales, the original artefact carries a heavy aged patina with deep earthy reds and copper-greens. Slight irregularities in the thickness of the band preserve the handmade character of the original object and the long history written into its surface.
