Style: Oval bezel with Lombardic inscription and linear shoulders

Significance of the Design:

This ring carries an inscription in Lombardic capitals, a script recognisable for its rounded and swelling forms. Medieval ring inscriptions could include short prayers, personal names and mottoes of love or devotion. Examples include phrases such as Ave Maria, the name of Jesus, or romantic Latin expressions such as Amor vincit omnia — “Love conquers all”.

The exact reading of worn medieval lettering is often difficult, so the words on this particular ring may never be known with certainty. Its triple linear grooves frame the bezel and deliberately draw attention towards the inscription. A ring like this may have acted as a personal emblem, a devotional object or a seal, and the possession of an inscribed object could also have carried a sense of refinement and status.

The Find:

Discovered by a metal detectorist in Essex, the original artefact survives with a deep green patina and unusually clear lettering. Essex's strong medieval links with London and continental trade provide an appropriate historical backdrop for a ring whose script and style reflect the wider culture of medieval Europe.
