Period: 14th–15th Century (Late Medieval)

Find Location: Gloucestershire, UK

Style: Circular bezel with incised geometric X and linear motifs

Significance of the Design:

This ring belongs to a broad family often described as merchant signets. In the late medieval period Gloucestershire was deeply involved in the wool trade, and merchants, landholders and other people engaged in commerce often relied on personal marks and seals to authenticate documents and transactions.

The central X or saltire, flanked by parallel lines, may have acted as a simple non-heraldic personal device. Geometric marks of this kind could be highly individual and were useful to people without a formal coat of arms. The X was also widely understood as a protective sign, so the design may have carried both practical and symbolic meaning. The substantial shoulders give the ring a robust, purposeful appearance suited to regular wear.

The Find:

Discovered by a metal detectorist in Gloucestershire, the original artefact survives with a rich dark patina and noticeable wear across the bezel. That wear suggests repeated use over a long period and is entirely consistent with a ring that may have been pressed into wax as a personal seal.
