A substantial Celtic currency ring reproduced from a Northumberland find. Its weight and irregular cast form offer a bold choice for a historical ring or modern wedding band.
Crafted for the Present:
- Museum-Quality Historical Reproduction: An exact 1:1 historical reproduction cast from the original British find, preserving its substantial form and surface detail.
- Individually Hand-Cast in Leeds: Individually hand-cast, sized and finished at our Leeds Corn Exchange workshop.
- Approved and Hallmarked: Approved and hallmarked by the London Assay Office in the precious metal selected.
The History of the Find:
Period: Celtic (c. 300 BC–50 AD)
Find Location: Northumberland, UK
Style: Heavy cast ring traditionally described as “ring-money”
Significance of the Design:
Heavy metal rings of this kind have long been described as “ring-money” and are thought to have formed part of a world in which weighed metal could act as portable wealth as well as personal adornment. A substantial ring could be carried, worn or exchanged, giving it a practical value beyond decoration.
Such objects may have played a part in important transactions involving livestock, goods, obligations or gifts, although the precise use of any individual ring is difficult to prove. The circular form has also been linked with ideas of continuity and the eternal cycle, and metal rings were sometimes deposited in significant places, leading to interpretations that combine wealth, status and ritual meaning.
The Find:
Discovered by a metal detectorist in Northumberland, the original artefact is a notably heavy cast with an earthy patina and slightly irregular thickness. Its smooth internal surface suggests it may have been carried or worn as well as valued for its metal, preserving the mystery of an object that could have been both practical and symbolic.
Choosing a Celtic wedding band
You can choose this reproduction as a modern wedding ring. Its traditional description as ring-money does not prove that the original was a wedding band. Consider the width, weight and feel on your hand, and ask our Leeds workshop for help with fit.
