The History of the Find:
Period: Viking Age / Early Medieval attribution
Find Location: Northumberland, UK
Style: Scored band with repeated linear decoration
Significance of the Design:
The defining feature of this ring is its repeated scored decoration. Linear cutting and scoring appear throughout Viking and Early Medieval metalwork, creating rhythm, texture and a play of light across otherwise simple forms. On a ring such as this the marks may have been purely decorative, but they could also have carried a personal meaning for the wearer.
Northumberland sat within a landscape shaped by Anglo-Saxon and Norse influence, warfare, trade and settlement. A simple but strongly decorated band fits comfortably within that world: practical jewellery whose individuality came from the marks worked into its surface rather than from gemstones or elaborate settings.
The Find:
Discovered by a metal detectorist in Northumberland, the original artefact survives with an aged patina, worn edges and deliberately scored lines. The irregularities of the original surface have been retained in the reproduction, allowing the modern ring to preserve the character of the archaeological find rather than smoothing it into a contemporary design.
Weight by Metal (approximate, varies by ring size):
- Sterling Silver (925): 2.3g
- 9ct Gold: 2.5g
- 18ct Gold: 3.4g
- Platinum: 4.6g
