Significance of the Design:

This ring features a simple incised cross, placing it within the early Christian imagery of Late Roman Britain. Following the legalisation and growing acceptance of Christianity in the 4th century, crosses and other Christian signs began to appear more openly on personal objects and jewellery.

The cross may have served as both a declaration of faith and a protective symbol. For a wearer living through the social and political changes of the later Roman period, such an image could have carried reassurance as well as religious meaning. The low oval bezel and restrained decoration give the ring a practical, personal quality rather than the ostentation of some earlier Roman jewellery.

The Find:

Discovered by a metal detectorist in Oxfordshire, an area rich in Roman villas, farms and settlement, the original artefact survives with its cross clearly visible. Wear to the bezel may suggest that the symbol was repeatedly touched or rubbed, perhaps as a familiar devotional gesture, although that can only remain an interpretation.
