A Celtic currency ring reproduced from a Scottish find, with a compact cast form and central groove. Choose it as a personal historical ring or a distinctive modern wedding band.
Crafted for the Present:
- Museum-Quality Historical Reproduction: An exact 1:1 historical reproduction cast from the original British find, preserving its surviving form and surface texture.
- Individually Hand-Cast in Leeds: Individually hand-cast, sized and finished at our Leeds Corn Exchange workshop.
- Approved and Hallmarked: Approved and hallmarked by the London Assay Office in the precious metal selected.
The History of the Find:
Period: Celtic (c. 300 BC–50 AD)
Find Location: Scotland (regional find)
Style: Small cast ring traditionally described as “ring-money”
Significance of the Design:
Small bronze rings like this have traditionally been described as a form of “ring-money”. They are thought to have belonged to a world in which metal itself could act as a portable store of value, allowing rings and other compact objects to move easily with traders, travellers and households.
Smaller examples may have been better suited to everyday exchange than the great heavy rings sometimes associated with larger stores of wealth. They could also have been worn on the body or clothing, allowing value and adornment to overlap. The circular form has often been linked with unity, continuity and the cycle of the seasons, giving these simple objects a possible symbolic dimension as well as a practical one.
The Find:
Discovered by a metal detectorist in Scotland, the original artefact has a distinctive pitted surface and slight variations in thickness. Its weathered texture gives it an unusually tactile character and preserves the appearance of an object that spent many centuries beneath the ground.
Weight by Metal (approximate, varies by ring size):
- Sterling Silver (925): 4.0g
- 9ct Gold: 4.3g
- 18ct Gold: 5.9g
- Platinum: 8.0g
Choosing a Celtic wedding band
You can choose this reproduction as a modern wedding ring. Its traditional description as ring-money does not prove that the original was a wedding band. Consider the width, weight and feel on your hand, and ask our Leeds workshop for help with fit.
