A medieval floral ring reproduced from a Shropshire find, with an open-work rosette bezel and the original surface character preserved in precious metal.

Style: Openwork rosette bezel

Significance of the Design:

This ring features an intricate openwork floral bezel, creating a lighter and more delicate appearance than the heavier solid signets of earlier centuries. The pierced petals allow light to pass through the design and give the ring an unusually airy quality for a medieval piece.

Flowers were rich with meaning in medieval art and could represent purity, courtly love, devotion and divine grace. A rosette such as this may therefore have been chosen simply for its beauty or may have carried a more personal romantic or religious meaning. Decorative floral rings were also well suited to gifts of affection, making the design particularly evocative of the private world of medieval jewellery.

The Find:

Discovered by a metal detectorist in the Shropshire countryside, the original artefact is remarkably well preserved. Despite the delicacy of the design, much of the pierced floral work survives, showing the skill involved in creating such fine detail. Its dark patina contrasts strongly with the open petals and preserves the character of the original find.

The Casting: This is a faithful 1:1 cast of the Shropshire find, preserving the pierced floral detail and slender profile of the original band.

Materials: Available in Sterling Silver, 9ct Gold, 18ct Gold and Platinum.

Finish: Hand-finished to bring out the openwork detail while retaining the character of the original.
