A Roman figure signet that preserves the detail of a Sussex bezel find, reconstructed as a wearable ring with the adaptation explained below.

The History of the Find:

Period: 1st–2nd Century AD (Early Roman Britain)

Find Location: Sussex, UK

Style: Oval bezel with incised figurative pseudo-intaglio

Significance of the Design:

In the Roman world a seal ring could be both jewellery and personal identity. This bezel carries a stylised figure cut or cast directly into the metal, echoing the engraved gemstone intaglios worn by wealthier Romans.

The figure may represent a deity, hero, messenger or other symbolic subject and may have been chosen for the values or protection associated with that image. If used as a seal, pressing the bezel into wax would create a recognisable impression for letters or transactions. In Sussex, with Roman centres such as Chichester nearby, rings of this broad tradition belonged naturally to the culture of villas, markets and administration along the South Coast.

The Find:

Discovered by a metal detectorist in Sussex, the original artefact survives principally as the oval figured bezel, the ancient band having been lost or broken away. The surviving figure remains unusually clear, and the modern reproduction reconstructs the piece as a complete wearable ring while preserving that original design.
