The History of the Find:

Period: 14th–15th Century (Late Medieval)

Find Location: Wiltshire, UK

Style: Circular bezel with incised flared cross and radiating lines

Significance of the Design:

The bezel carries a flared cross, similar in character to a cross patonce, surrounded by radiating scores. In medieval imagery a cross of this kind would naturally have carried Christian associations, while the radiating lines may have been intended to suggest divine light or simply to draw the eye towards the central symbol.

The shoulders are heavily decorated with vertical grooves, creating a faceted surface that catches the light. This kind of treatment may have been intended to give a bronze or gilded ring some of the richness associated with more costly gold jewellery. In a county marked by churches, pilgrimage routes and powerful religious institutions, a ring combining visible Christian imagery with bright surface decoration would have made a strong personal statement of faith and identity.

The Find:

Discovered by a metal detectorist in Wiltshire, the original artefact retains traces consistent with surviving gilding. When new, this gilded finish would have made the ring appear far brighter and given it a richer appearance. That could suggest an owner with some means or aspiration, perhaps a prosperous local landholder, merchant or member of the minor gentry, although the individual's identity is now lost.
